L’objet de cette intervention est de présenter quelques aspects problématiques de l’analyse produite par Bourdieu dans son livre « La domination masculine », qui pourraient servir de guide de vigilance pour les hommes désirant travailler sur la question du genre. Le dénominateur commun de ces aspects pourrait être qualifié de « masculinisme ».

Avant de commencer, précisons qu’il y a deux types de non-mixité de dominants : celle qui est ouvertement caca, et celle qui essaie de couvrir les mauvaises odeurs. Ce dont je vais surtout parler, c’est la seconde catégorie, en l’occurrence les groupes de mecs qui estiment que c’est trop bien de se retrouver en groupe de mecs pour déconstruire ses privilèges, lutter contre le patriarcat, etc.

There was a time when I felt lucky. When statistics of assault and recounted stories of aggressive, irresponsible and selfish boyfriends and men seemed so pleasently on the other side of a glass wall, allowing me to see everything quite clearly but providing me with a non permeable barrier which kept me safe. And I was lucky for a long time. Then it ran out, and people who’ve hurt me all happen to be men fairly entrenched in our anarchist subculture.

It begins in North Carolina where I spent most of my life till I was twenty-nine years old. There I developed a flexible conception of gender and an openness to others’ sexual orientation but held on to binaries of male and female, hetero and homo. The bulk of my story focuses on a three year period spent in San Francisco where I was immersed in a queer milieu. There I learned a great deal about further possibilities for sexual and gendered identity that went beyond rigid binaries. Much of this learning occurred in queer territory and led to my alignment with that identity yet my initial inability to claim such a title.
